About Us
To pursue a life long dream, Gary and Melissa Cline purchased the 23 acre farm on the western slope of South Mountain in 1983. At the time the fields were full of raspberries and brush. Over the next seven years through perseverance and hard work approximately 30,000 seedlings were planted. In 1989 the first tree was sold and many hand made Fraser Fir wreaths. That same year Gary’s parents moved out from Wheaton, MD and built the Christmas shop with an apartment above. They too, got into the business spending many hours helping with the care of the trees.
The 1990’s flew by and the Christmas tree farm continued to thrive with replanting each year. A new Building was built to house all the equipment and new varieties of trees were planted to meet customer taste. A Christmas Tree lot was constructed to display the cut trees on the farm. Even Santa’s house arrived. A landscaping business was started as customers asked for assistance in making their backyards a paradise.
By the new millennium the children were off to college to pursue their dreams. We started researching new tree varieties and methods of planting. To date we have planted several new varieties of trees and found that hand planting has been most successful. Our goal is to make your visit to South Mountain Plantation a family tradition where memories are made.
South Mountain Plantation
South Mountain Plantation is situated off Alternate 40 east of Boonsboro, Maryland. Panoramic views of four states make visiting the farm a delightful experience. Wander through the forest of Christmas trees and while selecting the one right for you, enjoy the peace and serenity of country life. The farm is home to many species of birds and native animals, so don’t be surprised if you come upon deer or rabbits in your tree search.
Choose-and-Cut Christmas Trees
The choose and cut experience allows you to select the perfect tree for your family. By purchasing a choose and cut tree you are assured the tree is fresh when you take it home. Varieties on the farm include Douglas Fir, Fraser Fir, Canaan Valley Fir, White Pine, Norway Spruce and Blue Spruce. A wide variety of heights and shapes are available to choose from when considering your perfect tree.
Christmas Shop
The Christmas shop features a variety of Christmas ornaments that blend with the theme of a real Christmas tree. Candles and all the accessories are also available. A unique Pin Stand is also available which makes putting the tree up a breeze. Just ask any customer who has one the ease in which a tree is ready for decorating.
Wreaths and greens can be purchased at the shop.
This year the shop will be featuring hand made quilts. These are exclusive items made by Melissa Cline to enhance your holiday decorating and find a gift for the hard to buy family member or friend.
Landscaping
Home landscaping services are available during the Spring and Fall of the year. If interested in discussing your landscaping needs, please call in early January to schedule an appointment with Gary Cline.
Quilts
After years of experience sewing by machine and by hand, Melissa Cline has begun her own quilting business. A variety of items including quilts will be on display in the Christmas shop this season. For special items or designs, please contact Melissa Cline to discuss your request.
